PAPERHEAD

PAPERHEAD EP.0 and demo

Quick answer

EP.0 is keep-forever only if you already claimed it. The live store has no demo button. 1.0 is October 9.

PAPERHEAD has three public builds in its history. Only one of them is the October 9 game. Do not mix their checklists.

EP.0's own news post is the hard line: after September 24 the prologue page is gone, there is no new claim path, and owned copies stay on the account. If you did not grab it, that window is closed. Do not hunt grey-market keys for a free prologue.

What the demo actually contained

Developer post for the new demo:

  • A new exclusive level from the full game
  • Narrative + atmospheric horror mixed with the combat
  • The same verbs: toss, kick barrels, stomp, shotgun
  • Full controller support called out as a first

That demo was also tied to Steam Next Fest (February 23 in that post) and to an earlier "planning to release this spring" line that is now obsolete — the live date is October 9. Use the demo notes as a feature list, not a calendar.

The current English store page for 2680280 does not expose a demo install link. If Valve or the developer puts one back, it will be on that page. Third-party "demo download" posts are not a source.

Performance reports

Steam discussions on the app include a thread titled "Awful performance." That is a player report on a pre-1.0 build, not a benchmark. Store minimum is a 9800GT-class GPU and 2 GB RAM; recommended is GTX 460-class and 4 GB. Those specs are old on purpose (cardboard look, DX9 minimum). They are not a promise that a 2026 driver stack will be hitch-free.

Practical steps if EP.0 or an old demo already chokes on your machine:

  1. Cap FPS in GPU control panel before blaming the game.
  2. Run windowed once. Several paper-aesthetic Unity/unreal-likes hitch in exclusive fullscreen on first boot.
  3. Verify the install. Then wait for 1.0 patch notes — do not copy "fix" registry edits from unrelated games.

We will replace this section with frame-time notes after October 9. Until then, "awful" is a discussion title, not a measured 1% low.

Soundtrack and extra media

EP.0 shipped a free OST (YouTube / Bandcamp / EP.0 Steam page as DLC) with a tracklist that is very online (ch1LD w4ke up, W3LCOME 2 H3LL, PAPERTOWN, …). Fun, not a spoiler map. The OST existing does not mean 1.0 has the same tracklist.

What carries, what doesn't

ThingCarry into 1.0?
EP.0 in your Steam libraryYes, as its own app. It stays playable.
EP.0 campaign progressNot documented. Assume no.
Demo progressNot documented. Assume no.
Muscle memory (kick, pencil bomb)Yes. That is the point of playing the slice.
Clip economyNo. Shops are a 1.0 add.
Prop-carryBecomes an optional golden upgrade, not a default.

Start here if you are deciding whether to boot the prologue tonight: if you own it, yes. If you don't, skip to getting started and wait for the 9th.

FAQ

I never claimed EP.0. Can I still get it? Not via the closed Steam page. The developer said there would be no claim path after September 24.

Is the demo the first hour of 1.0? It was "a playable slice" plus an exclusive level. That is not the same as "hour one."

Mac demo? Store requirements are Windows. Discussion requests for Mac have no official yes.
